The Age of Silver: Portraits of Photographers

John Loengard's The Age of Silver is a tribute to the last great generation of photographers working with negative film, a medium now nearly as antique as the engravings and photogravures of earlier eras. Loengard began photographing his fellow photographers thirty years ago, eventually gathering a roster of world-class artists that includes Richard Avedon, Berenice Abbott, Henri Cartier-Bresson, André Kertész, Annie Leibovitz, Sebastião Salgado, and many more. Born in New York City in 1934, John Loengard is best known for his long association with Life magazine, for which he was a freelance photographer before joining the magazine as a staff photographer in 1961. After serving for many years as the magazine's picture editor, he continued as a contributing photographer for Life until 2000. Loengard is the author of eight previous books and has taught at the International Center for Photography, the New School for Social Research, and workshops around the country. In 2005 American Photo magazine identified him as "one of the 100 most influential people in photography." David Friend is editor of creative development at Vanity Fair and was the director of photography at Life magazine in the 1990s. A distinguished journalist, Friend is the author of Watching the World The Stories Behind the Images of 9/11 and was an executive producer of the CBS documentary 9/11 , which won Emmy and Peabody awards. Among many other publications, he has edited Vanity Fair's Hollywood (2000), Oscar Night (2004), and Vanity The Portraits (2008).
