From the Preface:The free school, like all counter-cultural movements, lives under the steady gaze of parasitic visitors from the dominant culture-most often masquerading as "educators" or writers." We've become good copy in the last couple years. LIFE, LOOK, TIME: They've all run stories on the alternative schools...In February, the latest in an endless parade of "educator-writers" strolled into our storefront-with pad and pencil-prepared to write this book about free schools... It angered us to see so many books-with their royalties-feeding off the alternative schools...We want this book to be more than an exercise in creative capitalism. Writing it has brought us-parents, teachers, and students-closer together. It has contributed to our awareness of the problems incumbent on those who would start a free school. Ideally, it will also have a positive effect on our readers and somewhere, somehow, help others who are struggling towards the creation of their own alternatives.
