Sarah Lucas: Situation

A leading figure among the Young British Artists (YBAs) who emerged in the 1990s, Sarah Lucas (born 1962) probes representations of gender, sexuality and national identity using everyday materials such as cigarettes, tights, furniture and vegetables. In recent years Lucas has combined fragments of the body with organic materials, further addressing universal concerns of nature and mortality. To accompany her first major solo show at the Whitechapel Gallery in London, Situation provides an important and timely survey of Lucas’ sculpture, installation and photography from 1990 to today. It explores her approach to exhibition-making and installation and her concern for the architectural environment in which her work is placed. This book features color photographs, an illustrated chronology and documentation of the yearlong Situation series alongside a personal account by the artist. It also includes a series of short scholarly texts, each focused on a single work.
