Why are the prices of pearls and all other things so high? When World War II broke out, James Assail — an Italian diamond merchant, fled Europe to Cuba. Here, he found a new way to make a the US military needed timeless wristwatches and thanks to his connections in Switzerland, Assail could meet this need. When the war ended, Assail's chances of doing business with wealthy America were in trouble, and he was left with only a few Swiss watches. The Japanese need watches, but they don't have money. However, they do have pearls.
