In Chancery (1920) is the second volume of the first of the three Forsyte trilogies. It takes up the story from The Man of Property and records the feud between Soames and his cousin 'Young' Jolyon. The personal dramas of the Forsytes take place against the backdrop of the Boer War in South Africa and the threat it poses to the international prosperity and stability so essential for the continuence of the family's materially comfortable, if at times turbulent, lives.
