Gombrich on Art and Psychology

Written by an international team of art historians, philosophers and psychologists, this book discusses Gombrich's wide range of work on art and psychology. Beginning with his early involvement with the semiotics of Karl Buhler, it moves through to his current work on the psychology of perception and ideas surrounding primitivism. The introduction describes the evolution of Gombrich's thought and two essays study his "Viennese Connection". Further essays examine the disputes over art and illusion, the perception of Greek art, the sociobiology of art, "The Sense of Order" and contemporary primitivism. Gombrich himself has also contributed an important article: "Four Theories of Artistic Expression".
