Clouds without Rain: An Open Letter to Pastors about Caring, Counseling, and Divorce

In many churches in America, pastors are considered the first and last defense against divorce. Unfortunately, pastors rarely have adequate education or training that qualifies them to lead others in this very delicate subject. Many pastors only know a handful of Bible verses that justify their theories on the subject. Pastors who smugly brag about the longevity of their marriages tend to sidestep painful issues that could lead to divorce and treat victims of systemic cruelty like they are just looking for loopholes to justify their sin—the alleged sin of divorce. What happens when pastors use their brand of spirituality as a club to bludgeon those who dare utter the D word? Is there no one who will hold them accountable for their sanctimonious cant?
