Children in the Woods

This essay appeared in "Crossing Open Ground". It first appeared in "Pacific Northwest" April 1982, copyright 1982 by Barry Holstun Lopez. Lopez reflects on an experience as a youth that instilled in him a responsibility for children, and goes on to recount episodes in the forest giving children a sense of the "fragment of the whole" and "the existence and substance of myriad relationships", that form a sense of being and belonging.
