O tej książce

W.F. Skene’s 3 volume history of Celtic Scotland is one of singular scholarship, arguably the most influential Scottish historical work of the 19th century. Each volume stands alone and can be read separately, rather than sequentially. Volume III. studies Scotland during the reign of Alexander III., the last of Scotland’s Celtic kings with chapters on the Tuath or tribe in Ireland, Wales and Scotland, thanages, the Finê or clan in Scotland, clans and their genealogies, concluding with a chapter on land tenure in the highlands and islands subsequent to the 16th century which contains a significant contribution by Alexander Carmichael. The footnotes in Latin, gathered in this ebook as endnotes, are not as numerous as the previous two volumes and thus the text may prove perhaps not as arduous for some readers. Some knowledge of Latin would still help in fully appreciating the erudition of this work though once again, readers should not be dismayed if they lack a working knowledge of Latin since a great deal of information can still be garnered and learned. The index of searchable keywords & phrases greatly facilitates the garnering experience. The logical table of contents or navigational control file (NCX), built from the summaries of key events and dates in the Table of Contents and margins throughout the original text, provides ease of access to specific areas of interest and adds a new dimension to the reading and learning experience. Along with images of the map and tables from the original work, an illustration from ‘Celtic Fairy Tales’ and a selection of recent photographs are included throughout the text and in appendix IX.
