Building the City of God: Community and Cooperation among the Mormons

Building the City of God is the only detailed treatment of the United Order movement among the Mormon people, tracing its development and that of various other cooperative associations and economic enterprises that were based on the Law of Consecration and Stewardship. Included are the communal-sharing experiences in Nauvoo and during pioneer migrations to the Salt Lake Valley. The book also contains chapters on Zion's Board of Trade and on the church welfare program, a still successful system begun during the 1930s to deal with poverty during the Depression.
