It proved that man was lost, aud that God had come to seek him. It proved man's sin, and God's grace. "Where art thou?" proves that man is out of the way, that he has left his right place and position, and that God is anxious about him. He is lost; but God has come down to look for him. He has fallen, and God has come to lift him up. Adam fled from the presence of the Lord and sought an hiding-place, and God might justly have turned away, and left him to his sad but no, Adam must be brought out, and learn what God is. He does not yet know Him in all His and mark how God reveals Himself in grace. Before He speaks of punishment for their sin, He promises a Saviour, the seed of the woman to bruise the serpent's head. The gospel is first proclaimed in Eden, and that by God Himself. Thus we see how God speaks. Adam may hear the voice of God in the garden, and tremblingly seek an hiding-place, and well he but it is the voice of love, and blessed for him that he was brought out of his hiding-place to learn that it was so. And blessed for us if we have come forth from our hiding-place to learn that grand and glorious truth, that God love3 the sinner, and that He has provided a Saviour for but what ingratitude when that love is spurned, and that Saviour despised. He is long-suffering and not willing that any should perish, therefore He comes forth full of anxiety, and His voice is heard crying, Sinner, where art thou?
