O tej książce

Utah-Idaho Sugar Company, one of the nation's major producers of beet sugar, was founded at Lehi, Utah, in 1891. Not only was the Lehi plant the first in the Mountain West, but it was the first to be equipped with American-made machinery, the first to utilize beets grown by irrigation, the first to establish a systematic program for the production of seed, and the first to set up auxillary cutting plants connected by means of pipelines with central processing plants.Attington describes the conditions leading to the establishment of each of the company's various plants, the problems created by the boom prices of World War I and the subsequent collapse, the outbreak of Cruly Top disease that almost destroyed the industry, and the achievement of scientists in developing disease-resistant plants. The Jones-Costigan Sugar Act of 1934 is examined, as are subsequent national sugar acts, including the Sugar Act of 1965.
