O tej książce

Ashamed or Embarrassed is not an Excuse is a moving account of the author s experience of growing up with learning difficulties. He shares painful reminiscences from his school days and demonstrates how his disabilities led to a downward spiral, both in his education and his state of mind. Although this is a subjective account of the author s own experiences, most of the issues are relevant today and many children and adults across the world will identify with Michael s experiences. Throughout the book there are examples of how the education system in the 60s and 70s failed pupils with learning difficulties, some of which are also relevant today. For example, the children were put into groups based on ability, which does more to invite bullying than deter it. The author also recalls how children with severe behavioural problems were given propriety over those who lacked ability, because of the disruption they caused to other pupils. This story needs to be told to prevent other children s lives being disrupted. Living with learning difficulties, is like living with a progressive disease, it stops you from achieving many goals...I have struggled all through my life and it is still a very lonely life, hopefully telling this story, will help with children reporting bullying and being statemented.
