O tej książce

This annotated edition of Edmund Spenser's Amoretti Edmund Spenser's enduringly popular sonnets are usually exclusively encountered in texts using the original spelling from when they were first published in 1595. This can be a big hurdle to many a modern reader who may struggle to understand even the literal meaning of the poems. In this companion volume to my YouTube video series, I present the verses from Spenser's cycle of sonnets both in their original Elizabethan orthography together with my own modernised version. In order to preserve the poeticness, regular metre and musicality of the sonnets, many archaic words or word forms are inevitably necessary to keep even in a modernised text. Therefore, in addition to providing short introductions to mythological allusions used by Spenser, each poem also has annotations on word meanings – especially where a word is used in a sense that is now archaic or rare. What is revealed to the reader turns out to be highly accessible poetry, once it has been modernised and the needless complexities of archaic or pseudo-archaic spelling have been removed from the equation.
