Allies

A nihilistic detective named Cooper is reluctantly assigned to investigate a series of unrelated homicides in South Boston. His only lead is a twenty-three year old girl named Muriel who may have seen the killing from a deserted ally. Having witnessed the violent death of her mother and sister at thirteen, Muriel has spent time in a mental hospital, now recently released and on her own. Cooper must navigate through whatever clues Muriel can provide. In the course of the investigation Cooper finds himself drawn to the enigmatic Muriel who brings out feelings that he has long buried. As Cooper gets closer to the bizarre truth behind the killings, he must battle memories of the humiliating death of his policeman father and a shooting five years past gone horribly wrong. Cooper wages a desperate battle against an evil he cannot see but only feel and at the same time struggle to confront his growing feelings for Muriel, feelings he continues to deny as they threaten to destroy the very essence of his existence. It is a race against time towards the final confrontation, on which he must place himself in harm’s way to protect the only person who has ever given him meaning to his life and pay a debt that is long overdue. Both Muriel and Cooper move toward the truth within themselves, a truth they must face together as unlikely “allies.” Allies is not simply a mystery, but a story of two people struggling to overcome their past and find some semblance of identity. The story gives insight into the frightening world of the character Muriel who must fight against the stereotype of mental illness, a world that fails to see that she is “gifted.” Allies is about human conflict and the coming together of two people who are lost. Forced by circumstance to form an alliance, each comes to discover the truth that lies within themselves and the attraction they feel toward each other. More than mystery, Allies is a character study of courage and discovery.
