O tej książce
This is the story of an American woman who was a voluntary exile in Europe. Daughter of a mill agent, she had married a son of the family who owned the mill. The couple had one child & lived an uneventual life until one morning in the 7th year of their marriage. The husband was going to the city; the car wouldn't start so he asked his wife to drive him in the second car. She drew a jacket over her nightgown. On the way back she ran out of gas. As she had on a transparent nightgown she didn't want to get out of the car, but no one came to her assistance except the town rake. He followed her into the house and took advantage of her in the hall. The husband came back for his briefcase and found them. He left the house and his wife never saw him again. Ten days later he died of a heart attack. His family sued for custody of the child and got it. The woman was disgraced & fled to Europe. She came back once, terribly homesick, but at the airport she heard a mechanic singing a song that was connected with her disgrace and she took the next plane back to Europe, where she is still wandering around.
