"Looks like pirates to be sure!” declared Jack Cockrell joyfully to no one but himself. With a widening grin, he paused briefly in the road overlooking Charles Town, South Carolina. Through a gap in the tree line he caught sight of the wide harbor, its wharfs and a handsome brig coming to rest and lowering its anchor, its white sails furling. “Captain Steed Bonnet is back from a rich voyage, from the way his Royal James sits so deep in the water,” Jack mused. He remembered seeing the powerful two-masted ship back in October. From a hill overlooking an inlet, he had watched Bonnet and his crew make repairs to the barnacled 150-foot hull at nearby Sullivan’s Island.Now, eight months later in the summer of 1718, the same delight swept through him as he sauntered down to the harbor on a fine, bright morning with the sky colored like a robin’s egg.Welcome to Jack's world!
