O tej książce
This volume contains four classical books by Henry Brooks Adams, an American historian, Pulitzer Prize winner and member of the Adams political family (descending from two U.S. Presidents). It includes his only two novels (Democracy and Esther) -really intelligent works-, and two non fiction books. The books DEMOCRACY. AN AMERICAN NOVEL. In March 1880 this book was published anonymously. Several unauthorized editions were printed, until the 1925 edition listed Adams as author. He remarked (ironically as usual), "The wholesale piracy of Democracy was the single real triumph of my life."—it was very popular, as readers tried to guess who the author was and who the characters really were. ESTHER. Does a spirited young painter who's fallen in love with a preacher need to comprise her own personal convictions to marry him? The author uses the scenario of a romance novel to debate larger subjects such as the essence of art, religion vs science, love vs reason, intelligence vs beauty among others. A very intelligent and under-appreciated piece, that will pleasantly surprise the reader. THE LIFE OF ALBERT GALLATIN. A biography. TAHITI. The story of this country and its people.
